Symposium on Forest Sciences 2010
Biodiversity and sustainable use of forests
Date: Thursday, November 4, 2010 Place: Tieteiden talo (Kirkkokatu 6), Helsinki
The Finnish Society of Forest Science invites oral and poster presentations for the Symposium on Forest Sciences 2010.
Session 1. Who still cares about forest biodiversity - topics of biodiversity research in the 2010s
Contact person: Secretary of the Forest Biology club Tuomas Aakala, tuomas.aakala (at) helsinki.fi
Session 2. Biodiversity as an economic opportunity
Biodiversity contributes to several forest-based products and services. Some of these are market goods, whereas others possess considerable potential that has not been utilized so far. Interesting new products and services are among others those related to climate change mitigation and watershed management, genetic modification, and new forest products. Keywords for profitable utilization are productization and cost-efficiency.
Finnish Forest Economics Forum wishes for new approaches to the issue, also from young researchers.
Contact person: Secretary of the Finnish Forest Economics Forum Marjo Maidell, marjo.maidell (at) indufor.fi
Session 3. Methods for estimating biodiversity
Field inventory -based data collection in forest planning will be replaced by remote sensing methods. Can biodiversity be estimated without field measurements or can field measurements be targeted reliably using auxiliary information?
Contact person: Secretary of the Finnish Forest Mensurationists club Antti Mäkinen, antti.makinen (at) simosol.fi
Sessio 4. Environmental aspects in everyday forest harvesting operations
Contact person: Secretary of the Council on Forest Operations and Technology Veli-Pekka Kivinen, veli.kivinen (at) helsinki.fi
